Also, as an employee in the Social Media business

I would just like to say I STRONGLY DISAGREE with Tumblr’s little ‘promoted posts’ marketing plan.

I get that they need to make money and that companies are getting essentially free and very effective advertising if they plan their social strategy on Tumblr well, however Tumblr works for businesses because it ISN’T in your face. You choose to follow a brand, you choose to reblog a picture and give them more airtime and publicity on the site. I know what they’ve done (from what I can tell) doesn’t change this much but the point is - products tend to sell themselves on Tumblr in a way that other social networks can’t achieve, and any kind of promoted post is simply going against the whole integrity of Tumblr that makes it such a worthwhile marketing platform. It might just be increasing the size of a post slightly - but that rings alarm bells in user’s heads - ‘This is advertising’.

Marketing on Tumblr has never felt like marketing. Promoted posts will shatter that illusion and kill the trust between users and brands.
